History
The Latvian Catholic Community
of Montreal
had its beginnings in the early 1950's when a number of Latvian newcomers to
Montreal began gathering in order to celebrate religious, family and
community events together. Every gathering is special and over the
years has included performances of traditional music, songs and dance by
Latvian members and their families. This wonderful community spirit
has contributed to keeping the memories and history of the Latvian culture
current and vibrant in
Montreal. The Catholic community gathers once a month at
Notre-Dame
Basilica of Montreal in Vieux Montréal and celebrates mass in the
Chapelle Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal
as
well as
social events in the banquet hall on the main floor. The Latvian Catholic
group is part of the greater Canadian Latvian community which continues to
keep in close
communication today and participates in one another's social events during
the year.
